Why your Cape Town business isn't showing up on Google
You're posting, you're hustling, you've got a Google listing — but when someone searches for what you do, you're nowhere. Here's the real reason, and the order to fix it in.
Here's the hard truth, and it's actually good news because it's fixable: Google can only show people what exists and what it trusts. If you're invisible, it's almost never because you're doing too little — it's because the work hasn't produced the few things Google actually puts in front of searchers.
There are only three ways to appear when someone googles your service. Let's look at each.
1. The map pack (the top 3 with the map)
This is the most valuable spot for a local business — and the fastest to win. It's powered by your Google Business Profile. If your profile is thin, unverified, or has no reviews, you won't rank here.
The single biggest lever? Reviews. Message every customer you've ever helped and ask for an honest review. Five genuine reviews can move you up the map more than almost anything else.
2. Organic results (the normal blue links)
These require a real, live website with content. No website — or a "coming soon" page — means there is literally nothing for Google to rank. This is why a website isn't optional: it's the thing that makes the rest possible.
Once your site is live, suburb-focused pages (think "plumber in Table View", "salon in Parklands") help Google understand exactly where and who you serve.
3. Paid ads
Ads are the only way to appear instantly. A small budget — even R50–R100 a day — on high-intent searches like "near me" can bring leads while your free visibility builds.
Map pack and ads can make you visible in days. Organic ranking takes 2–3 months. So don't wait on SEO — do all three.
The fix order that works
- This week: get a live website up (with SSL), fully complete and verify your Google Business Profile, and get your first 5 reviews.
- Weeks 2–4: add suburb pages, list your business in local directories with the exact same name, address and phone everywhere, and switch on a small ad budget.
Do that, in that order, and you stop being invisible.
